The end of the LMS era?

Filed under: English, LMS, Language, Norwegian, PLE, Virtual Learning Environment, eLearning — frepa @ 15:04

At Norwegian eStandard they write about the approach of the end of the LMS era -  "II LMS-æraen er snart slutt?" (Norwegian only), but from a slightly different angle than my analysis.

Read it all at http://www.estandard.no/stories.php?story=05/11/25/3128954 (unfortunately only in Norwegian)

So do Teach and Learn online at: http://teachandlearnonline.blogspot.com/2005/11/die-lms-die-you-too-ple.html, using the rather catchy title "Die LMS die! You too PLE!". I do however feel that Leigh sees LMS and VLE as being equals. For me, the VLE is at a higher level in the taxonomy; basically a name for anything that is a virtual (online) environment for Learning. It is sometimes claimed that LMS is an American expression while VLE is a European expression. I do however prefer to regard the LMS a kind of VLE.

Tools Interoperability Guidelines v1.0 Public Draft Released

The IMS Tools Interoperability (TI) approach addresses the growing demand for a reusable mechanism for integrating third-party tools with core LMS platforms. Tools can add specialist functionality to the LMS such as assessment or discipline-specific teaching aids. The approach recommended greatly simplifies this task whilst also offering a Web Services solution equally applicable to Java and .Net implementers. The reuse of a commonly understood approach across tools will eliminate the need for bilateral solutions, thus focusing investment on adding real value to the learner experience.

LIFE Expert meeting on Learner Information". Läs mitt Possition Paper från Cambridge.

The papers from the DC-2005 Conference are avaliable online

Filed under: Conferences, Metadata, Misc, Semantic Web, eLearning — frepa @ 10:39

The papers from the DC-2005 Conference are now avaliable online at http://dcpapers.lib.sfu.ca/, where the papers from previous DC Conferences are avaliable as well.

There are some papers that i find especially interesting from an e-learning perspective - even though they do not explicitly address e-learning, the content is applicable to e-learning with a minimum of fantasy…:

The importance for Web applications to reach all kind of potential users and customers is being stressed by companies and public sectors. The standardization initiative for Web applications, WAI and the Universal Design framework establish useful rules for building accessible applications for any kind of disabled and non-disabled users. The proliferation of Semantic Web technologies and formal ontologies offer a technological opportunity for establishing automatic and advanced methods for accessible Web applications. In this work we introduce a method for publishing Semantic Web content that establishes separated stages for content selection and its presentation, through Semantic Portal. We are applying some of those principles to a portal devoted to international affairs.

We present a national ontology development nd service framework being developed in Finland in 2003-2007. The framework is based on a set of related core ontologies, most notably on a national upper ontology based on the commonly used Finnish General Thesaurus YSA maintained by the National Library of Finland. The framework implements three ontology services by a web-based system ONKI. Firstly, ONKI supports distributed collaborative development and versioning of interde- pendent ontologies. Secondly, external cataloging and indexing systems can use ONKI as a web service for ontology-based annotations. Thirdly, information retrieval systems can use ONKI for disambiguating keyword meanings for concept-based search on the Semantic Web.

Markup is based on mnemonics (i.e. element names, attribute names and attribute values). These mnemonics have meaning, being this one of the most interesting features of markup. Human understanding of this meaning is lost when the encoder doesn’t have a good command of the language the mnemonics are based on. By "multilingual markup" we refer to the use of tags built with mnemonics in one’s own language, but still following the rules ofthe original markup vocabulary. In this paper we show the benefits of using multilingual markup vocabularies, especially in large digital library projects, and we describe our work to automate the use of multilingual vocabularies, including the translation of DC to Catalan, French, German and Spanish.

Web content accessibility for impaired people has been mainly addressed by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) developed by the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the W3C Consortium. Those guidelines have proved to be good diagnostic means for testing accessibility for different types of impairments, as well as for guiding the development of accessible content. A further step would be to promote discovery of material having appropriate accessibility support, as well as the adjustment of control and display of resources to meet user accessibility needs and preferences [5]. The last two challenges have been addressed by the IMS Global Learning Consortium in the IMS-AccessForAll (ACCMD) and the IMS Learner Information Profile (ACCLIP) specifications. Although IMS has approached both goals in a learning framework, both accessibility specifications pay a special attention to impaired users’ needs. As a first step, in this paper we survey how far IMS accessibility specifications cover WCAG, and discuss the convenience of extending it to the whole WAI guidelines. Secondly, we argue how accessibility could be considered as a key issue for promoting reusability. We continue explaining why using a semantic framework (such as the MPEG-7 semantic tool, RDF or OWL) for describing textual and contextual information in a standardized manner could promote both, accessibility and reusability. Finally, we explain how some accessibility issues have been already addressed by XimetriX’s xmDex, a semantic-web Content Management System (CMS). We conclude proposing a plan to better integrate accessibility specifications and contextual description tools into that CMS.

We present a national ontology library devel-opment tool ONKI under development in Finland. ONKIÕs main goal is to support collaborative development and reuse of interdependent ontologies. It features change management and versioning of ontologies and concepts as well as a Browser component which provides the on-tology search and utilization services as Web Services.

Skype + Podcast Recorder = SkypeCasters

From Unbound Spiral: Skype + Podcast Recorder = SkypeCasters

This is an old story, but never the less, an interesting way of combining technology for Podcasting.

Introducing instructions for SkypeCasting. The front-end solution for podcasters to create great sounding audio recordings from interviews and conference calls using Skype. For the last few days I’ve been recording podcasts using Skype. As the call ends with a couple of clicks it is converted to mp3 and uploaded to a blog. This is a real bloggers solution providing podcasting in almost real-time without resorting to studios, or fancy gear. Let the New Year ring in with new voices, and new conversations. Audio and podcasting will make a difference. Let’s get the thoughts out into the world. Innovate in 2005 — start podcasting. This post contains my first podcast and the instruction on how (links at the end).

ePortfolio 2005 - behov for å rydde i begreper

Filed under: Repository, SCAM, Semantic Web, Swedish, eLearning — frepa @ 12:42

Eduforge: Innovation for Education

Eduforge is a really interesting initiative. It is basically a "SourceForge for education".

Eduforge is an open access environment designed for the sharing of ideas, research outcomes, open content and open source software for education. You are welcome to use our community resources or start your own project space.

I believe that it could be sound to establish an "own place" for development projects dealing with ICT and Learning. In that way it is less likely to be "polluted" by the "technocracy" that is often the case at sites like SourceForge. It is not that it is all bad but, it tends to make the educationalists disappear quite rapidly… This makes it harder to carry our a joint development of technology and pedagogy.

I recently wrote an article about the similarities of Open Source development and pedagogical development (in terms of how teaching methods evolve) and how those similarities could be utilized for carrying out R&D with a purpose to develop technology as well as refine and develop pedagogical methods. I am convinced that most teachers would feel a certain level of familiarity with Open Source methods, if they could just relate it to the development of teaching methods. Eduforge is a place where we might get closer to such approach. I will publish my article at frepa.blog as soon as it is "properly" published;)

Besides the positive aspects I mention above - a place such as Eduforge makes it easier to find, navigate and participate in development projects since everything is about ICT and learning at Eduforge. Hence - you don’t have to figure that out first…

Register at Eduforge!!
