From Interopérabilité: Microsoft and ISO - how to destroy the ISO process

Martin Bryan is stepping down (after his three year term) as convener of ISO/IEC JTC1 SC34, the place of the OOXML debacle. Says he: "This year WG1 have had another major development that has made it almost impossible to continue with our work within ISO. The influx of P members whose only interest is the fast-tracking of ECMA 376 as ISO 29500 has led to the failure of a number of key ballots." (ECMA 376 is OOXML), "and The days of open standards development are fast disappearing. Instead we are getting “standardization by corporation”, something I have been fighting against for the 20 years I have served on ISO committees. " So, Microsoft is single-handedly responsible for destroying the standardization efforts of numerous engaged individuals and organizations, as well as the work in an important international standardization organization. I can’t find words for the disappointment I feel. Peter Kopelman, take some responsibility for the business ethics of your company!

Detta är förmodligen ett riktigt beslut. CDF har många intressanta egenskaper och mycket av den underliggande tekniken, det vill säga de format som CDF bygger på, är sedan länge beprövade. Konkurrens bland office alternativen är livsviktigt för den fortsatta teknikutvecklingen, särskilt som funktionerna i office flyttar ut på webben och blir allt med integrerade med annat.

Ny vändning i formatkriget - Computer Sweden

Opendocument Foundations grundare byter fokus från ett dokumentformat till ett annat. Syftet är att slippa se Microsoft ta över marknaden helt och hållet.

Creative Commons, Free Software Foundation and Wikimedia Foundation are working on to make the FSF’s GFDL and CC’s CC-By-SA compatible. This will mean that in future all the Wikimedia content (Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikimedia Commons, etc.), that are licensed under GFLD can be remixed with content using CC-By-SA. The Wikimedia Foundation’s Board made a resolution about this some days ago.

Microsoft samlar på sig patent för existerande teknik. Det gör att småföretag tvingas skriva på avtal som föreslås av Microsoft. Det blir för jobbigt och dyrt att bestrida de tveksamma patenten.

Jag behövde visserligen inte fler argument mot mjukvarapatent , men här kom just ytterligare ett. Det är dessutom ytterligare en orsak till att det är högst olämpligt att ha Microsofts VD Peter Kopelman i Umeå universitets styrelse! Här ägnar de sig uppenbarligen åt att systematiskt patentera andras arbete.
